UK Wildcats take home their 8th NCAA championship title, while winning every home game on a Robbins floor

New Orleans, LA, April 03, 2012

Here at Robbins, it’s not just about the # of basketball teams that play on our floors, it’s about the # of champions that are developed along the way. Building the best sports flooring in the industry is our passion and purpose.  We are committed to the long term health and performance of the athlete. For the University of Kentucky Wildcats, this was never more critical than in the current 2011-’12 season when the #1 team in the nation defeated Kansas to win their 8th NCAA Championship Title. With their star player, #23 Anthony Davis, and a coach with great UK Rupp Arenaleadership and an eye for talent, the UK Wildcats were unstoppable and ended their near perfect season with the trophy to prove it.

Watching March Madness, whether in person, or on TV, is the most exciting 4 weeks in college basketball. From brackets to spirit wear, loyal fans show pride for their college teams in a multitude of ways. And while the allure of the players in uniform and mascots catch your eye on screen, Robbins is more in what’s going on beneath them and their interaction with the floor itself.  Beneath the surface of the shiny hardwood with gamelines and school logos, is a well engineered subfloor consisting of just the right amount of mechanical features that provide protection for the athlete. The subfloor build-up is critical to the longterm health of the athlete since the floor can have a significant impact on joints, muscles, and the endurance of the player. Proper construction of the floor is a science, and with over 100 years of continued improvement to the mechanics of our floors, Robbins understands what is necessary to achieve a floor that not only looks great on camera, but also improves performance and enhances endurance of the athlete. For this reason, a broad list of players including; Anthony Davis, Michael Jordan, Labron James and many others not only start their career on a Robbins floor, but continue it as well.

Because of the excellence we strive for in building the best sports floor in the industry, the University of Kentucky has been a longtime customer of Robbins and has not only 1, but 2 Robbins hardwood sports floors. Memorial Coliseum is home to the women’s basketball team, and also serves as the practice floor for the men’s team. Rupp Arena has had a Robbins floor since it opened its doors in 1976, and currently owns an All Star Portable flooring system that is used for every home game. Kentucky managed to do what every NCAA college basketball program strives for- they won every single home game this season- and they did it all on a Robbins floor. We congratulate Coach Cal and the Wildcats on a great season and much deserved championship title. Let’s see if we can bring home another Robbins victory next year!

Robbins dealer recycles local high school floor for new sportswear retail store

Brandsen Hardwood Floors contributes to Better World Program through local gymnasium recycling…
Portland, OR, November 15, 2011

Brandsen Hardwood Floors, one of Robbins exclusive dealers in the Portland, OR area, was recently chosen to install a recycled floor from a local high school gymnasium in a major sportswear retail store that opened earlier this month in downtown Portland. As part of the Better World program, the company has committed to using recycled hardwood floors from local gymnasiums in their new and remodeled retail stores to promote environmental efforts. Terry Brandsen of Brandsen Hardwood Floors oversaw the project and worked closely with the store on the installation. When asked his thoughts on the goal they are seeking to accomplish, Brandsen stated that “they have found an excellent way to blend recycling with style and functionality. It just seems so fitting that a “retired” old floor from an institution of learning is still teaching, even in retirement! Every time a customer walks over the threshold of the new store, the first thing they will notice is “hey, this floor is recycled!” As that influence spreads, persons will be energized to see what other products out there can be re-used instead of thrown away.”

The school floor that was chosen came from Mountain View High School in Vancouver, WA. After extensive water damage had occurred in the school’s gymnasium, Mountain View chose Brandsen to install a new Robbins Bio Channel Star 5.3 with Versa Shield vapor protection. During the renovation, Brandsen took special measures to ensure the integrity of the hardwood remained intact by carefully removing the old gym floor, a low profile anchored system.

Brandsen Hardwood Floors is accustomed to working with recycled (reclaimed) wood. This family owned business has been finding other uses for the wood they carefully remove from job sites for decades now. For the Brandsen team, finding other uses for the recycled wood is not only a sensible way to protect the environment, but is also a rewarding challenge as well. As Terry Brandsen explains “Recycling has always made sense, however it hasn’t always been in fashion. Growing up in the business, we were always on the lookout for “good wood” that was being thrown away. These old floors, doors, and trim boards would be rescued from trash heaps and find their way into our home remodel projects. As our gym floor business developed and we landed contracts to replace large gymnasiums, it made perfect sense to continue this recycling into a field where the expectation was that you were going to back up a big dumpster and throw all this wood away.“

The staff at Evergreen Public Schools, the district where Mountain View HS is located, was excited to learn their old floor had been recycled and used for other purposes. The new store will have a significant meaning to the kids at Mountain View who have made many memories on the old court. And while the sentiment of the project has been very important, equally significant was the satisfaction of both customers. Brandsen worked diligently with architects to ensure the new floor was designed to fit the needs of the school, while also addressing the moisture problems in the gymnasium. In a letter of recommendation from Susan Steinbrenner, Director of Facilities for the Evergreen Public School System, she stated that “The recent floor replacement project was very challenging. We had several other projects going on simultaneously, so coordination was critical. We wanted to achieve a performance floor system even though the existing floor had a very low profile. Resolving the moisture problem at the slab surface was also a concern. Brandsen helped us find solutions during the design phase and the project came in within our budget and time constraints. We are very happy with the service that Brandsen Hardwood Floors has provided over the years and recommend them for your upcoming projects.”

Robbins gives back and joins efforts with Abacus & Regupol to provide new floor to the Shane Victorino Boys & Girls Club

Philadelphia, PA, October 11, 2011

Shane and Melissa Victorino recently opened the doors to a newly renovated Nicetown Boys & Girls Club following a promise made to the kids in the Nicetown community of Philadelphia. The Shane Victorino Foundation, which was founded in 2010 by Shane and his wife Melissa, pledged nearly $1M to renovate the 105 year old building, and with the help of several partners including Robbins Sports Surfaces, that dream became a reality.

During the reopening celebration on September 22, 2011, a tearful Victorino expressed his appreciation for the partners that contributed to the successful renovation. “The renovation of the Nicetown Boys & Girls Club is a very special initiative for me and my wife, Melissa,” said Shane Victorino, co-founder of the Shane Victorino Foundation & center fielder for the Phillies. “Not only have we recognized the need that exists to help children in this community, but we are proud to have partners like Regupol America, and others, join our effort to provide them with a safe, positive place to go after school.”

Along with Regupol America, Robbins Sports Surfaces donated the materials for a brand new padded polyurethane gymnasium floor valued at over $28,000. Robbins padded polyurethane flooring systems provide superior athletic safety and excellent durability to last, providing the kids at the Nicetown Boys & Girls Club a safe playing surface that will last for many years. In addition to the materials, Abacus Sports Installations, Robbins exclusive synthetics dealer in Pennsylvania, generously donated the labor to install the floor and worked diligently to finish the project in time for the grand reopening.

In response to the generous donations made, Al Mollica, Chief Development Officer for Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia stated that the organization’s “staff, volunteers and members are grateful to the Regupol Corporation and their subcontractors for their extraordinary donation of flooring throughout our newly renovated Shane Victorino Nicetown Boys & Girls Club. Every day for many years to come our members and visitors from throughout the community will take full advantage of the durability and functionality of the flooring in our ctorino Nicetown Club. Thank you for your community-minded corporate philosophy and for a generous expression of support that will benefit thousands of Philadelphia children for years to come.”

According to Ken Thomas, Vice President of Marketing for Robbins, “we are very appreciative that we were in a in a position to give back and had the opportunity to do so for such a worthy cause. This project epitomizes the company culture and spirit of Robbins’ employees – working everyday in close cooperation with our suppliers and dealers to deliver beautiful, high quality sports flooring systems”.

Xavier University Enhances Cintas Center with new Robbins All Star Plus

The Musketeers Gear up for the 2011-‘12 Season & NCAA Rule Changes
Cincinnati, OH, August 22, 2011

Xavier University has geared up for the 2011-‘12 Musketeers basketball and volleyball season by installing a new Robbins All Star Plus portable flooring system. The new floor, which was installed on August 12th, is an upgrade from their previous Robbins floor that was installed in 2000 during the construction and opening of the Cintas Center. With the recent NCAA rule changes that moved the women’s basketball 3-point line back one foot to the men’s 3-point line, the upgrade occurred just in time for the Musketeers upcoming season. In addition to a updated look and new paint lines, the Robbins All Star Plus also provides increased resiliency and shock absorption for improved player safety and game play performance.

Robbins, along with Cincinnati Floor Company, has had a long standing relationship with Xavier University. The Cintas Center, which is home to both the Musketeers volleyball and basketball teams, continues to make improvements to their facility each year to remain a state-of-the-art facility, an attractive feature for both athletic and student recruits. Mike Bobinski, Associate VP & Athletic Director at Xavier, explains during an exclusive interview on their website that “we’re really fortunate to have the premier floor manufacturer in the country right here in Cincinnati, Robbins Flooring. They produced our 1st floor, and they produced the 2nd floor we now have. This is state of the art. It’s what is in the NBA arenas around the country. It is their finest floor“.

Bobinski also understands the importance of the playing surface and the impact it has on the outcome of the game, and the impact on the athlete. While the previous floor served the Musketeers well during the past 10 years, he explains that “there’s no doubt that our volleyball team and our men’s & women’s basketball teams will really notice a difference when they step on it. It’s got a great feel, really stable, has more resiliency to it than our old floor had at this point in time, so I think it’s a great upgrade for us.”

Robbins is honored to be the #1 flooring choice for the Xavier Musketeers and we wish them great luck in the upcoming season!
