To protect your investment and to assure that your floor provides lasting satisfaction and the performance that you expect, we recommend:

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

FLOOR STAINS, GUM, and SHOE MARKS

Floor stains can be avoided by wiping spillage from the surface immediately. Staining occurs when spills are absorbed into the finish. Gum can be removed by freezing and scraping it off with a plastic putty knife. Shoe marks should be removed with approved* floor cleaner.

DAILY

Daily sweeping with a properly treated dust mop* will keep the floor surface free from dust, grit and abrasive particles. Keep all walk off mats clean.

MONTHLY

Remove foreign debris and clean entire floor with approved floor cleaner*.

ANNUALLY

Robbins recommends that your maple floor  be “screened” and re-coated with a new coat of finish at least once a year.  Properly abrade and tack-clean the floor as recommended by the finish manufacturer prior to applying finish.

*APPROVED MAINTENANCE PRODUCTS

Contact your flooring contractor to determine the brand and type of finish used on your floor. You should contact the finish manufacturer for detailed maintenance products and procedures. When oil based finishes are used, spot cleaning with 100% virgin mineral spirits may be performed for hard to remove dirt and stains. Recycled mineral spirits can contain any number of contaminates, based on where they may have been used; when recycled it is impossible to remove all foreign materials in the liquid. When using 100% virgin mineral spirits you should allow it to flash off a minimum of one hour, no less, depending on conditions (humidity).

GENERAL CARE

Temperature, Humidity and Ventilation
Be sure that your HVAC system is operating to provide a temperature range of 55-80 degrees and 35-50% relative humidity.  Ventilation equipment should be available for year-round use.  Humidity and Ventilation are critical considerations for your new wood floor.  35-50% relative humidity is normally required for long trouble-free life.  If humidity rises to over 50%, promptly begin circulating air by opening interior doors and windows and by activating the ventilating system.  However do not draw warm, moist air in from outdoors, as excessive humidity will cause wood to expand.  Summer months are especially critical.  Inspect your wood floors regularly.  If necessary, turn on the heating system.  If less than 35% humidity level persists, use humidification to prevent excessive dryness and possible wood shrinkage.  Maple flooring, being a solid wood product, is hygroscopic material.  It will expand and contract as it absorbs and releases moisture.  It will change dimensionally until it reaches equilibrium with the surrounding environment.  This is an uncontrollable, yet natural characteristic of solid wood flooring.  Excessive expansion and shrinkage issues that may result due to environmental conditions are not the responsibility of Robbins or the installer, and are not covered under warranty.

EXCESSIVE TIGHTENING

When excessive tightening of the floor becomes noticeable, reduce the wood moisture content. Lowering relative humidity and providing airflow can assist this.

EXCESSIVE CRACKS

When unusually wide cracks begin to appear, increase the relative humidity in the room.

KEEP WATER OFF THE FLOOR SURFACE

Avoid exposure to water from tracking during periods of inclement weather by the use of walk off mats at all entrances. Windows and doors should be closed during rainy weather. All leaks must be corrected immediately. Machine scrubbing or power machines that induce water under pressure should not be used. This is a critical point since industry warranties exclude damage due to moisture.

PREVENT EXPOSURE TO MOISTURE

Any evidence of dampness within your building should be called to the attention of your architects and engineers. Interior drains and down spouts should be properly insulated to prevent the development of excessive condensation moisture. Exterior drains and downspouts should be kept clear and flow away from the building. All exterior doors should have watertight thresholds.

EXPANSION JOINTS

Expansion joints around the perimeter of your floor, at columns, or inserts, should never be blocked or obstructed.

ANCHORING BLEACHERS

No fixtures, equipment or bleachers should be lagged through wood floors into concrete without first cutting wood away from lag bases and making provisions for expansion in the floor system.

DAILY CLEANING

  • Daily cleaning should be performed using a dust mop fitted with non-oily, dust-binding static mop cloths.
  • This daily maintenance routine is important because dust, dirt, and sand can act as abrasive materials that gradually polish the surface, potentially making the floor smoother and shinier over time. Regular removal of these materials helps maintain the performance characteristics, appearance, and long-term durability of the Pulastic floor system.

DAILY STAIN AND MARK REMOVAL

  • Stains and surface marks should be removed daily using the cleaning products and procedures outlined in the Pulastic stain removal instructions.
  • Daily removal is important because marks and contaminants can become increasingly difficult to remove over time and, in some cases, may permanently affect or damage the floor surface. Prompt cleaning helps maintain the appearance, performance, and long-term durability of the Pulastic floor system.

STANDARD WET CLEANING

  • Standard wet cleaning should be performed at least once per week using an auto scrubber with vacuum, fitted with 3M # 5100 red cleaning pads and Pulastic Eco Clean.
  • During cleaning, the diluted cleaning solution should be scrubbed into the floor surface while the dirty water is immediately removed to help prevent contaminants from drying back into the floor.
  • Pulastic Eco Clean should be mixed at a ratio of 1:200, equivalent to approximately 6 fluid ounces of cleaner per 2.5 gallons of water.
  • If the floor remains excessively dirty after standard wet cleaning, the Pulastic Eco Clean solution may be scrubbed into the floor and allowed to emulsify for approximately 5-10 minutes to help loosen embedded dirt and contaminants before removal. Do not allow the cleaning solution to dry on the surface. After the emulsification period, the floor should be scrubbed again and the dirty solution completely removed.

PERIODIC DEEP CLEANING

  • Periodic Deep cleaning should be performed approximately twice per year depending on use. This deep cleaning process helps remove soap residue, grease, embedded dirt, and bacteria that can accumulate over time. Deep cleaning is generally recommended once the floor system is at least six months old.
  • It is often beneficial to schedule deep cleaning during extended facility shutdown periods, such as summer breaks or holiday closures.
  • Deep cleaning should be performed using an auto scrubber with vacuum, fitted with 3M #5100 red cleaning pads and Pulastic Deep Clean. If the desired cleaning results are not achieved with a red pad, a 3M #5300 blue cleaning pad may be used as the next level of aggressiveness. Because pad abrasiveness may vary between manufacturers, the pad should always be tested in a small inconspicuous area prior to full use to confirm compatibility with the floor surface and finish.
  • Pulastic Deep Clean should be mixed at a ratio of 1:10, equivalent to approximately 13 fluid ounces of cleaner per 1 gallon of water.
  • During the cleaning process, the diluted cleaning solution should be scrubbed into the floor surface and allowed to emulsify for approximately 5–10 minutes to help loosen embedded contaminants. Do not allow the cleaning solution to dry on the floor surface. After the emulsification period, the floor should be scrubbed and the dirty solution completely removed.
  • Following deep cleaning, the floor should always be rinsed using the standard wet cleaning procedure with Pulastic Eco Clean. This final rinse step helps remove any remaining residue from the surface texture and pores of the floor and should not be omitted. Pulastic Eco Clean should be mixed at a ratio of 1:200, equivalent to approximately 1.6 fluid ounces of cleaner per 2.5 gallons of water.
  • For additional guidance regarding intensive cleaning procedures, refer to the Pulastic cleaning instruction materials and guidelines provided by Robbins.

The use of unapproved cleaning products, excessively abrasive pads, improper maintenance procedures, or unsuitable cleaning equipment may result in surface damage or altered performance characteristics and falls outside the responsibility of Robbins Sports Surfaces, LLC.

CLEANING PROCEDURE

  • Sweep/vacuum floor.
  • Mix cleaner* with water using manufacturer’s recommended water-to-cleaner ratio.
  • Apply cleaner/water* solution to floor. Allow solution to stand on floor to emulsify, but do not allow cleaner to dry. Scrub with a natural fiber brush or red scrub pad, then remove solution with wet/dry vacuum. Immediately rinse with fresh water (under pressure or lightly scrub). Remove water with wet/dry vacuum. Continue cleaning sections of the floor until entire floor has been cleaned.
  • Place “wet floor” signs. Allow floor to dry overnight.

SCHEDULE

  • It is important to routinely remove dirt and grit. If allowed to build up, dirt, grit and grime will make long-term maintenance more difficult.
  • Spot clean as needed. Remove water with a wet-dry vacuum. Frequency of spot cleaning will depend on the amount of use, type of use, and the quality of daily maintenance.
  • Wash with autoscrubber and cleaner on a regular basis. Depending on frequency of use, surface may require weekly scrubbing. Surface should be cleaned minimally on a monthly basis.
  • For badly worn or damaged floors, consult Robbins or your authorized Robbins installer to determine if deep scrubbing, stripping or replacement is necessary.

SPOT REMOVAL

  • Remove difficult stains and/or scuff marks with a Nonabrasive Cleaner. Stronger cleaning agents (e.g., citrus-based cleaner) can be used for tar removal. Floor must be rinsed with water following use of any cleaner. Failure to remove cleaner could result in permanent discoloration of floor. Before using any cleaner, test a small area (in corner, behind bleachers) to determine best results.

IMPORTANT!

  • Keep dust and grit off floor. (Use floor mats at entrances to gym and high-traffic areas).
  • Avoid use of low-quality footwear (especially black-soled shoes) that can cause excessive scuffing.
  • Tables, chairs and movable equipment should have proper functioning “glides” to minimize indentations.
  • Don’t allow water or other liquid to stand on floor.
  • Avoid phosphates, solvents and all moderate-to-high-sudsing products.
