Robbins Sports Surfaces Awarded Patent for Innovative Woodgrain Application on Synthetic Floors

Recent News

Robbins Sports Surfaces, a leader in high-performance sports flooring, has been awarded a patent for its groundbreaking woodgrain application technique for synthetic floors. This innovation allows Robbins to apply a realistic woodgrain appearance to its seamless polyurethane floors, giving sports facilities and gyms the look of a traditional wood floor without the extensive maintenance requirements.

Designed with versatility in mind, the patented woodgrain application is particularly beneficial for K-8 schools, community centers and multipurpose athletic spaces that require a durable yet aesthetically pleasing surface. Robbins synthetic floors are known for their seamless, high-performance design, providing comfort and safety in competitive, intramural and amateur sports as well as general fitness and childcare applications.

The newly patented process, developed by Robbins Sports Surfaces Technical Director Todd Goodridge, enhances the company’s synthetic floor application procedure by integrating

realistic woodgrain markings directly into the liquid floor coating. The process involves applying polyurethane in liquid form onto a sealed base layer, after which Robbins utilizes a patented technique and apparatus to create the woodgrain effect before the coating fully cures. Once cured, the coating is marked with floorboard lines to replicate the appearance of traditional hardwood, then sealed with a protective clear coat to maintain durability and longevity.

“Receiving this patent for our woodgrain synthetic floor application is a momentous occasion,” said Jason Blake, Robbins Sports Surfaces Director of Synthetics. “For the first time ever, customers can enjoy the benefits of a seamless, synthetic floor with a real wood appearance. And Robbins is the first and only sports flooring manufacturer able to provide this to our customers.”

Robbins Sports Surfaces’ patented woodgrain synthetic floors are already in use across the U.S., Canada and the Netherlands, with installations in over half of the U.S. states, half of the Canadian provinces and 30 locations in the Netherlands. The patent approval marks the culmination of a nearly five-year process, solidifying Robbins’ position at the forefront of sports flooring innovation.
