Installs new Bio-Channel® LP Star System
Cincinnati, Ohio,
July 16, 2009 The University of Dayton’s Frericks Center is one of the nation’s top volleyball-specific facilities, and although the Flyers advanced to the NCAA tournament five out of the past six years, something was bothering the coaches, athletic department staff, and university officials. As they toured the country, they realized that their players were suffering more injuries than players at other schools and the issue deserved attention. In comparison to UD’s injury record, some schools had reported one-third to one-half fewer injuries like stress fractures, lower back strains, and tendonitis. According to Associate Athletic Director Joe Owens: “We were pretty sure our old modular plastic tile floor laid on a sixty-year old base was the culprit. As we investigated other top programs, we found that those schools that had high-performance maple sports flooring systems like Robbins’ Bio-Channel system had far lower injury rates and more competitive programs. In addition to being the right thing to do from a people value perspective, we knew that replacing the old system would improve our competitiveness and lower our medical costs at the same time. Since volleyball is a ‘head-count’ sport, schools receive a finite number of scholarships each year, so if an athlete is lost due to injury it is a big detriment to the program. In order to prevent potential injuries we couldn’t practice as hard as we wanted to on the old floor, and once injured, our athletes took longer to rehab and return to competition.” Working closely with Cincinnati Floor Company, the University selected a member of the Bio-Channel® family of systems, which have a strong history at top NCAA volleyball and basketball facilities. UD chose the Bio-Channel LP Star, a DIN-certified system with outstanding game play response for the athletes. The system is one of a number of designs utilizing Robbins’ proprietary Zero-G® shock pad which reduces energy-robbing vibration and increases the uniformity and consistency of the playing surface, both of which allow players to focus on their game, not the floor. States Owens: “We’re delighted with the new system and know that this will further elevate our program and help our recruiting efforts, but what made this project really stand out was the service, quality, and value we received from Cincinnati Floor Company – great installation crews, great follow-up from start to finish, and they even found a way to help us save us enough money on the project that we could paint the entire facility.” With aspirations of taking their program to the next level, the University of Dayton now has all the right tools in place to get there. * * * Professional installation of the UD floor was provided by the Cincinnati Floor Company.
