Robbins Continues Olympics Tradition at 2010 Vancouver Games

Cincinnati, March 03, 2009 – Los Angeles, Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Beijing and now Vancouver – the rich tradition continues. Even before the closing ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics, work had already begun on Robbins' next Olympic venue – this one with a unique twist.

For the past two years, Robbins has been working in close collaboration with Canon Design Architects, The City of Richmond, and Centaur Products, Robbins authorized dealer in western Canada, on a unique sports flooring concept at the Richmond Olympic Oval, home of the 2010 Olympic speed skating events. Unlike other single-use Olympic ice ovals, the host city wanted to maximize the use of the facility for the community before and after the games. They chose to install a modified Robbins Bio-Channel Classic® system in the inner part of the oval, much like the infield of an outdoor track. The city intends to take advantage of the multiuse facility to host basketball, court sport, and other events as well as speed skating and ice hockey events.

As for the recent Beijing Olympics, Robbins provided more than 75,000 square feet of Continuous Strip® XL maple flooring and custom sub-floor components for the renovation of the historically important Capital Indoor Gymnasium in 2007. This facility was home to the famous “Ping-Pong” Diplomacy Games in 1971 that helped normalize relations between the United States and China. The facility has hosted virtually every important Chinese national and international sporting event for the past forty years, including volleyball, basketball, badminton, table tennis and gymnastics. Capital Indoor Gymnasium, the largest indoor venue at the Olympics, is where the American men captured Gold and the women took Silver in volleyball.
