New Pulastic track replaces 15 year old rubber track.
Cincinnati, Ohio,
November 17, 2004 At Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, a spike-resistant multifunctional sports floor has replaced the original surface that had deteriorated with heavy use since the opening of the Elmen Center in 1989. The new Robbins Pulastic SP sports floor is the first of its type in the area. The floor is seamless, durable, easy to maintain, and guarantees comfort and performance. Augustana track and field head coach Tracy Hellman accompanied an Augustana delegation to Norway to inspect the Pulastic SP surface. “I was impressed with the shock absorption when running,” he said. “Sometimes the most important component of a running surface is how your body can hold up to the constant pounding. The Pulastic floor is one of the softest training tracks that I have ever run on. The exciting thing about this is the recovery time our runners will have when training. They will be able to recover from workouts faster resulting in higher and more intense training.” "The floor has excellent ball bouncing, grip, and sliding properties. Its unique composition can bear heavy loads, and is suitable for all indoor sports." The Pulastic multifunctional polyurethane sports floor is installed in stages as follows: 1. A polyurethane-bound granular rubber shockpad is bonded onto the subfloor using a solvent-free adhesive. 2. The porous rubber layer is then completely sealed with a polyurethane material. 3. Seamless self-leveling layers of high strength polyurethane resins are applied in one of many color options. (Augustana chose Blue - See Picture) 4. A low-gloss, top coat is then applied to the surface. This coating, together with the line-markings installed by line-marking specialists, ensures the final appearance of the sports floor. “The feeling of cushion is certainly different and something that not many tracks around the country have,” Hellman said. “Other tracks may be fast, but they are also very hard and punishing on the body. With our new surface we may sacrifice some speed, but improved workouts and chances of fewer injuries more than makes up for it. When recruits step on this track for the first time, it will give them an idea of what it's like to train on one of the premier training venues in the United States.” Augustana Athletic Director, Bill Gross was part of the Augie delegation that traveled to Norway. He says the new surface is ideal for the Hall Sports Forum's demanding schedule. The group visited several facilities using the Pulastic SP, Gross said. “We were impressed with the look, resiliency, and low maintenance of the surface. We are extremely excited about the multi-uses this floor will provide.” The Elmen Center enhancement project began in the spring of 2003 with an 8,000-square-foot addition to the southwest corner of the facility. Included were six coaches/faculty offices, three team locker rooms, a human performance lab, and a classroom. The weight room and athletic training room were also expanded.
